*The prices given below are indicators for early 2024, per person and for budget-style travel.

[#5] THAILAND

Thailand, known as the "Land of Smiles" will keep your smile goin with a budget of €22 per day. The country is celebrated for its welcoming culture, idyllic beaches, and stunning Buddhist temples but most of all in my opinion, the amazing, flavorsome and sometimes very spicy food! This blend of natural beauty and cultural richness makes it a beloved destination of mine and it's the type of country I could always go back to if the opportunity comes.

[#4] VIETNAM

Vietnam, at €21 per day, stretches over 3,000 km, featuring stunning beaches. I keep a very fond memory of my visit to Vietnam, my first ever adventure in South-East Asia when I was a teenager. The world-renowned Halong Bay, with its turquoise waters and forest-covered limestone islands, is breathtaking. The buzz of the million motorbikes in the street, the absolutely stunning city of Hoi An, the charm of the mountains and rice fields in the countryside and more. Vietnam also preserves its remarkable cultural heritage, including ancient towns, temples, and imperial palaces, making it a richly rewarding destination for travelers.

[#3] NICARAGUA

In Nicaragua, at €20 a day, you'll find a Central American country still untouched by mass tourism, offering affordable living. Highlights include:

  • the colonial towns of Granada and León, known for their colorful facades

  • the unique Ometepe Island with its twin volcanoes, situated in Central America's largest lake, Lake Nicaragua

The Atlantic coast is famed for surf spots, while the Caribbean side boasts a culture derived from pirate descendants. The Corn Islands are a hidden paradise in the Caribbean. The often overlooked country is definitely part of my must visit in life.

[#2] INDIA

In India, at €18 per day, the experience is intensely immersive. Immediately upon leaving the airport, the bustling crowds, distinctive aromas, sounds, and heat engage all senses. Magnificent temples and palaces share the landscape with beggars, women in vibrant saris, and sacred cows wandering amid rubbish. It's often said that one either falls in love with India or doesn't take to it at all.

India's top 3 spots include:

  • the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra, a symbol of love and one of the world's Seven Wonders

  • the ancient and spiritual city of Varanasi, offering a deep dive into Hindu culture along the banks of the Ganges

  • the majestic forts and palaces of Rajasthan, such as Jaipur's Amber Fort, showcasing India's royal heritage

[#1] LAOS

Laos, at €17 per day, stands as Southeast Asia's most affordable country. Its tranquil pace of life, absence of seaside access, and preserved wild yet welcoming nature distinguish it from the bustling Asian megacities. Life's serenity along the Mekong and Nam rivers is cherished, and even its capital, Vientiane, maintains a human scale with just 800,000 residents.

Generally, top attractions for tourists in Laos include:

  • the ancient city of Luang Prabang, known for its well-preserved architectural, religious, and cultural sites

  • the stunning landscape of Vang Vieng for outdoor activities like kayaking and caving

  • the impressive Wat Phou, a ruined Khmer Hindu temple complex that offers a glimpse into the country's rich history

These spots offer a mix of natural beauty, adventure, and cultural heritage, making Laos a unique place to explore.
